The Club was organized in December 1904, and Richard Hungerford was elected Chairman. The name—Black River Valley Club—was adopted by formal resolution of the Board of Governors on January 13, 1905. The BRVC is an outgrowth of the Union Club, which was organized in 1876. In 1891, it acquired a stone home at the present site of the BRVC, with two mortgages: one from the Agricultural Insurance Company and the other from Smith T. Woolworth and Sidney Cooper. The present BRVC building was completed in 1907, under the leadership of George C. Sherman, Orville E. Hungerford, and George H Babcock. The Westminster clock in the lobby was a gift of Mary S Goodale in 1907; she was also the first woman member. The portrait of Roswell P Flower, former NY State Governor and Congressman, which hangs in the reading room, was presented by his daughter Mrs. J B Taylor (Emma Flower.) The Club has always been a vital factor in the business, social, cultural, and civic life of Watertown and Jefferson County. |
